A series of self-portraits of 400 people in different outfits, make-up, and expressions taken at a photo machine in the city. The self as I am, the self as I want to be, and the self as others see me. ...... The images of “myself,” which are endlessly proliferating while wavering, appear as a mixture of longing and dreaming youthfulness. The work is filled with energy that confronts the fundamental question, “What on earth are people looking at? He was the winner of the 2003 Ihei Kimura Photography Award ICP (The Twentieth Annual ICP Infinity Award of Young Photographer). This work can be seen as the starting point for Sawada, who has consistently made photographic works based on the theme of “the relationship between the outside and the inside.
