Shiho Yoshida, “Surveying|Mountains”

As the Internet has become a familiar part of our daily lives, we are in contact with all kinds of “images” in our daily lives. Therefore, although it may be a matter of course, the “photograph” of a few decades ago is different from the “photograph” of today. Yoshida explores the possibilities of photography in the present in various ways. In this work, “Surveying|Mountains,” he approaches the subject of mountains. Yoshida explored (surveyed) the mountains through a complex combination of photographic processes, including image searches on the Internet, research in a virtual space on Google Maps, and actual visits to the mountains to take photographs. Even the same mountain can be seen and perceived differently depending on the angle and method of approach. The aspect of the mountains that Yoshida presented in the exhibition also changed each time. Through the accumulation of many attempts, Yoshida formed “mountains. This book is a compilation of not only photographs collected or actually taken by Yoshida, but also photographs of the exhibition space. In addition, Hiroki Yamamoto, a cultural researcher, contributed to the book. This book questions the way we look at the world today and the nature of images.
