Uemura Shoen” exhibition catalogue

This is the official catalogue of the major retrospective exhibition of Uemura Shoen, one of the leading female painters of the modern Kyoto art world and also known as the “master of beauty painting. This definitive edition features 110 works, from her earliest paintings, including the overwhelmingly popular “Hibiki” (Fire), “Prelude Dance,” and other representative works, to the first public showing of “Sei Shonagon” and her last work, “Early Summer Evening”. Contributed by Matsui Konasako, Shinoda Setsuko, and Yanagi Miwa.

Shoen Uemura (1875-1949) Born in Kyoto. In 1948, she became the first woman to be awarded the Order of Cultural Merit.
