Eiko Shimozono, Kizuna

The 36th Ihei Kimura Photography Award Winners

From the Screening Critique Shimozono's self-consciousness at the time of taking the photograph and the self-consciousness of various people at the time of being photographed spark in a moment of hundreds ofthousands of a second, and the photograph stops being taken with a sense of eternity. The images that emerge from these images are the very essence of “other worlds,” unrelated to meaning or aesthetics. Shimozono's work is imbued with a sense of absurdity that is hard to name. Daido Moriyama (photographer) When I look at Eiko Shimozono's portraits, I strongly feel a kind of “chi” that radiates straight from the subject. Each person has his or her own unique form of “chi,” but she takes it straight and throws it back. Comparing her recent works with those exhibited in her first solo exhibition “Gen-no-tou” in 2001. The precision of the exchange of energy has increased, and not only the intensity but also the softness has emerged. This is a sign of her growth. Kotaro Iizawa (photo critic)
