THE “KYOTO” MEISTER COLLECTION Catalog

SunM Color produced “THE ‘KYOTO’ MEISTER COLLECTION Catalog” as a tool for the “Silk Textiles Global Promotion Consortium” project of the Kyoto Prefectural Department of Commerce, Industry, Labor and Tourism.

This catalog was produced to offer new proposals for spaces and architecture using the excellent products created by the masters of Kyoto's proud traditional industries of Nishijin textiles, Kyo Yuzen textiles, and Tango textiles. As a catalog that combines the craftsmanship of masters with the latest technology, it is designed with a luxurious image reminiscent of Kyoto x traditional crafts.

Each page of the catalog has a QR code, which can be read with a smartphone or other device to view related content videos, detailed information, and ultra-high-resolution images that even show the texture of the fabrics. For the printing, SUNM COLOR adopted the “SAN EXCEL ART (8K printing) ®︎,” a technique created by master artisans at SUNM COLOR, to successfully capture the traditional world of Kyoto's artisans on the paper.

And of special note is the use of Snow Blue FS #620 paper, an extra-thick paperboard nearly 1 mm thick. This paper was run through our Heidelberg Speedmaster press for the first time. In order to run this extra-thick paper, the press was repeatedly serviced, and all possible precautions were taken to ensure a perfect print run. The press was running at an extremely low speed of 4,000 revolutions per hour, making a heavy sound that had never been heard before: “clank, clank, clank.
