In 1989, while working as a photographer in Tokyo, Yuriko Ochiai heard the news of the fall of the Berlin Wall and was inspired. The image was inspired by Wim Wenders' film “Berlin: The Poem of an Angel” - the image of an angel walking in front of the Berlin Wall. The angel in the film, who lived forever, wished to become human, and the discomfort he felt from being a bystander to the news images streaming from the television overlapped, and Ochiai decided to visit the area in order to meet, talk to, and touch the land and its people. What Ochiai wanted to capture was not the characters in the story of the collapse of socialism as reported in newspapers and on television, but the existence of ordinary people living a new everyday life. What Ochiai saw during his three-month trip to Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Romania, and Bulgaria, starting in Berlin. This is “Eastern Europe 1989 EASTERN EUROPE.
