SUN-M Color regards printing as an important industry that contributes to art and culture, and is involved not only in printing exhibition catalogs and photo books, but also in reproducing national treasure paintings and old documents, and collaborating with artists. The company has been in business for 40 years. In that time, the printing process has become more digitized and convenient. However, this has not eliminated the need for craftsmanship. There is something latent in first-rate works of art that makes people happy. In order to convey something that appeals to people's hearts and minds through printing, it is necessary not only to study the techniques, but also for those who handle them to have a certain sensitivity. For example, "brilliant exquisite art" (8K in printing), which we developed for fine art printing, is a technology that was realized by going beyond the basics. The most difficult part of printing is controlling water and ink. Furthermore, from the plate to the blanket and from the blanket to the paper, ink is heaped up so that minute dots rise up by applying exquisite pressure, each of which may or may not touch the other. These processes would not be possible without years of experience and sensitivity in dealing with beauty through printing. No matter how advanced printing technology becomes, the foundation of artistic expression is "people. We believe in the power of people, and with a "craftsman's spirit" of sincerity, we continue to take on the challenge of providing excitement.

Katsumi MATSUI was born in Kyoto in 1938. After graduating from junior high school, he worked for 10 years at a letterpress printing company. Next, he moved to an offset printing firm, and while working as a project leader in charge of special printing in its early days, he encountered the Heidelberg, the ultimate printing press. In 1984, he went independent from the printing machine operator, and founded SunM Color as an outsourcing firm for special printing. He regards "printing as an industry for contributing to the time-honored artistic culture of Japan," and his management is centered around people.

At SunM Color we earn the trust of clients through our people, and the products they create with their technical expertise. These are assets we have built up over many years by listening to the commitments and passions of each individual, and meeting their challenging needs. Sophisticated art printing wasn't our initial focus. In the past, when people began to approach us about reproduction of historical documents or artworks exhibited at museums, I remember curators would look at a finished reproduction with a magnifying glass and say "this is printed." Based on our desire to meet such high-level needs, we led the industry in adopting FM screening, and that in turn led to ultra-high-definition printing. In recent years, we've broadened our proposal capabilities by introducing new technologies. These include digital printers allowing production of works with stringent requirements even in small runs, and art prints conveying textures and three-dimensional effects. When someone approaches us and says "I want to make a work like this," we think together about how that can be achieved. We sometimes get challenging problems, but lots of new ideas bubble up as we work through them. Tackling challenges has led to real-world results, and brought SunM Color to the level we are at today. I hope we can collaborate someday, based on SunM Color's extensive experience and bold spirit of embracing new challenges, and experience the thrill of creating greater works together.
