Konkai Komyoji Temple is the oldest head temple of the Jodo sect and the first Nembutsu dojo established by Honen Shonin in the city of Kyoto. The temple has a large collection of cultural assets, including Buddhist statues, Buddhist paintings, Buddhist scriptures, and old documents, as well as the Shichido temple, which has been restored after being destroyed by fire four times, including during the Onin War. The entire collection of approximately 570 treasures will be preserved for posterity in large, all-color illustrations printed in high-definition on FM screens. The treasures include Honen Shonin's “Ippai Kishinbun,” “Yamakoshi Amida Zu” and “Jigoku Gokuraku Zu” said to have been painted by Keishin Monkatsu, the founder of Japanese Pure Land Buddhism, “Chisozame Nyorai,” and “Praise Pure Land Buddha Sutra,” translated by Genjo, all of which have contributed to the academic and religious world. On the occasion of the 800th anniversary of the great death anniversary of Honen Shonin, the temple treasures of Konkai Komyoji Temple are published here for the first time after several years of arrangement and research.
