Park Hyatt Kyoto Story Book

The Park Hyatt Kyoto Story Book won the Japan Printing Industry Federation Chairman's Award at the 58th Bookbinding Competition. https://www.jbpa.or.jp/zohon/zohon-winning.html

Why are people fascinated by the city of Kyoto, and why do they choose to stay at Park Hyatt Kyoto?
These two questions are deeply intertwined. “Park Hyatt Kyoto Story Book” seeks to answer these questions, aiming to convey the charm of Kyoto and the hotel to those who have yet to visit, as well as commemorate the hotel's 5th anniversary. The book needed to embody the refined elegance of the Park Hyatt brand, combined with Kyoto's unique aesthetic sensibility and craftsmanship, to appeal to discerning travelers.

The book is divided into two chapters. In the chapter titled “A journey into the spirit of Japan,” the five keywords of “Keshiki (scenery),” “Miyabi (elegance),” “Utsuroi (vicissitude),” “Oku (deep inside),” “Kasane (layering).” Through photographs and text, the chapter explores the sensibilities and history of the land passed down in Kyoto, reconstructing them as a unique hospitality experience that embodies the “culture” of Park Hyatt Kyoto.

The “Stories” chapter features interviews with experts who contributed to the creation of Park Hyatt Kyoto, including Tetsuo Harada of Takenaka Corporation, who was in charge of design, interior designer Tony Chi, and landscape architect Yasuo Kitayama. The book is not only a beautiful visual book but also a readable work that allows readers to deeply understand their philosophy, vision, and the backstory of the hotel's construction project.

The layout draws inspiration from Japan's minimalist aesthetic sensibility, featuring simple yet tension-filled typography and ample white space that conveys rich context. The binding employs traditional Japanese techniques (Wazōshi), with each book meticulously hand-bound by artisans. Wazōshi, which does not use adhesive, offers high durability and low environmental impact. It also opens smoothly, making it suitable for long-term display in guest rooms or lounges. It is a technique that combines both aesthetic beauty and functionality. Every detail reflects Japanese aesthetic sensibility, making it a book worthy of celebrating the history and future of Park Hyatt Kyoto. It will be placed in hotel rooms and libraries and lounges at Park Hyatt hotels around the world.
